Isaac (Isaac) Merritt Singer is an American inventor, actor and businessman, founder of the household sewing machine company of the same name.

Background

The first patent for the invention of the sewing machine was issued in England in 1790. It was difficult to call its design ideal, but even this was enough to significantly facilitate the work of seamstresses. Further, over the course of several decades, sewing machines improved, although not drastically. And this trend continued for several decades, until 1851, when the American Singer registered his patent. And he not only designed it, but also personally brought his ideas to life, creating the well-known Singer Corporation.

Biography of Isaac Singer

The fate of this American was not easy. He was born in 1811 to a family of German immigrants who settled in a small town in upstate New York. At the age of 12, Isaac left his parents’ house, rushing to roam the country with a dream of catching luck by the tail. However, he didn’t have much luck. Approaching his fortieth birthday, he could only boast of his closeness to Melpomene (as an actor in several obscure theaters). He had a textured appearance, he was applauded, but work in provincial theaters did not bring money, Isaac had to earn extra money in mechanical workshops. Mechanics fascinated him, he even managed to make several minor inventions such as machines for drilling stone or machines for sawing wood.

In one of these workshops, he found a permanent job. The company specialized in the repair of sewing machines of the Elias Howe model (then it was considered the best). But still, these machines often broke down and required repair, so Isaac had enough work. Once, he even threw in his hearts to the owner of the workshop that he himself would have invented a model that was much more reliable, of a better design. The owner mockingly replied to his worker that if he managed to translate his words into reality, he would earn more money than for all his past inventions combined. It seems to be an ordinary banter, but Isaac was turned on by this idea.

Isaac Singer, his sewing machine and business

To implement the mentioned idea, he was prompted by his acquaintance with the designer O. Phelps. Once he showed him a model of a sewing machine of his own design. Isaac liked her concept, but, in his opinion, required improvements. The weak point of Phelps’ typewriter was the rotation of the needle on the drum in a circle. Isaac thought about how to change the design for almost two weeks, until several brilliant ideas came to him at once:

  • let the needle move up and down, and not in a circle, like Phelps;
  • make the drive pedal, so that the seamstress had both hands free during work;
  • equip the machine with a special presser foot.

On such a machine, it was possible to make a seam of any length and any shape. It was these ideas that were embodied in the first model of the typewriter by Singer himself. He received a patent for this invention on August 12, 1851. Although later he had to defend himself in court against the claims of Elias Howe himself, who insisted that Isaac stole a number of technical solutions from him.

Legal battles brought Isaac together with a competent lawyer, William Clark, with whom they subsequently developed and implemented the idea of selling cars in installments. After all, each was then incredibly expensive – $ 100! – and only wealthy families could purchase it.

Singer himself continued to work on improving his own model, boldly introducing high-precision weapons production technologies into the manufacturing process of its parts. At the same time, Singer’s typewriters were already produced by four factories in 1858, and their output reached three thousand pieces a year. In 1863, Singer and lawyer William Clark established the Singer Manufacturing Company (I. M. Singer & Co, now Singer Corporation) with a capital of $550,000. Its new factories and company stores opened throughout the United States, which increased this capital exponentially and, in the end, allowed Isaac himself to retire, go to England and live there in idleness and luxury, without denying himself anything. What was the cost of one of his stables for 150 horses!

Death of Isaac Singer

The inventor and businessman died in 1875, which doomed his numerous children (according to some sources, there were 30 of them, because the deceased was famous for his love of love during his lifetime) to long litigation over the division of a considerable inheritance.

And even after the death of the founder of the company, it grew, because Singer’s factories continued to be built, new stores were opened all over the world, in many countries, including the Russian Empire. In 1902, a plant was built in the town of Podolsk near Moscow, which, ten years later, produced up to 600,000 sewing machines a year.
